Graffiti Abatement

Graffiti Abatement and Community Clean Up

GAP community clean up crews eliminate over six million square feet of graffiti annually and remove nearly a million pounds of bulky items from streets, alleys, and vacant lots. GAP crew supervisors provide more than 20,000 person hours of court referral supervision each year. Plus, each court referral requires substantial intake, monitoring, and reporting paperwork by GAP office staff.

Graffiti is how gangs and taggers claim turf and threaten each other. Its presence often leads to violent results. One way to defuse its power is to remove it quickly. Thousands of requests are completed each year in the LA City communities of Boyle Heights, Harbor City, Harbor Gateway, San Pedro, Wilmington, and Watts; and in the LA County areas of Baldwin Hills, Del Aire, and Lennox.

GAP employees provide more than 400 clean ups a year, including removal of weeds, brush, trash, and litter. Furthermore, GAP organizes Community Clean up Days with hundreds of volunteers, community groups, and the Los Angeles Police Department.

EOP Program

GAP has teamed up with the Office of Community Beautification , which established the Educational Outreach Program funded by the City of Los Angeles Public Works. A 30 minute assembly style program for 4th and 5th grade students has been developed at no cost to the schools. The anti-graffiti assembly consists of a colorful Power Point presentation, music, and a lively discussion on gangs, graffiti, vandalism, and the consequences of risky behavior. Students receive pencils, rulers, magnets, a workbook, and a brochure to take home.
