GAP School CurriculumBased on the City of Paramount,CA GRIP model, the 12 week curriculum for 4th graders presents both realities of gang involvement and the alternatives that young people have available to them. The lessons begin with discussing peer pressure, gang dress, graffiti, and the affects of gang membership. Other lessons examine the consequences of gang involvement and its effect on the families and the youth's future. Students are introduced to positive alternatives and techniques for achievement and are encouraged to set goals, and make positive lifestyle choices. The GAP curriculum is designed to reinforce the LAUSD and LACOE Principles of Learning and to meet or exceed the State of California Department of Education's Standards in reading and writing. The curriculum is devised to present clear expectations, encourage accountable talk, and present academic rigor. It addresses a significant core of knowledge, creates an environment of high thinking demand, and promotes the active use of knowledge. Also, the program becomes an element of the school's state-mandated School Safety Plan and contributes to the ongoing educational development needed for improved test scores. GAP Classroom Advisors serve thousands of students in the communities of Carson, Compton, Gardena, El Monte, El Sereno, Harbor City, Harbor Gateway, Lomita, Long Beach, Lynwood, San Pedro, Wilmington, and Watts. GAP conducts two major culmination ceremonies per year with thousands of students and many smaller ceremonies. Students receive certificates and t-shirts recognizing both their achievement and their commitment to stay out of gangs. This is when they take the anti-gang pledge : "Never have, never will."
